Canterbury Museum proposed changes

A huge change is planned for the Canterbury Museum. A proposed $195 million plan has been announced, unveiling a bold design.

According to https://www.canterburymuseum.com/about-us/media-releases/museum-seeks-public-input-into-195-million-proposed-redevelopment-plans, the main reason for needing the redevelopment is the aging building, citing issues with leaks, insulation, pests damaging displays and air conditioning.

The museum requires another $70 million in funding for the project. They are seeking public feedback which can be provided at www.canterburymuseum.com. The proposal document can be read here. Concept design images can be found here.

Key changes:

  • Demolition of parts of the museum, allowing for new exhibition space
  • Incorporating the Robert McDougal Gallery into the museum
  • The addition of a second cafe
  • Installation of base isolation on the whole complex
  • A return of the blue whale skeleton to be put back on display
